Artist Statement

My practice is firmly rooted in the accumulation and exploration of time. My works have progressed from heavily conceptual diary and photography works to paintings that I ultimately feel passionate about. The making of my works take place over thirty-days, originally influenced by the moons Synodic month. I apply paint as many times a day for the thirty days. The emphasis in these works is strongly based on process, routine and time. The final aesthetic exists as a separate entity but one that is becoming more significant to me. I find paint is a perfect medium to explore time through, due to its layering and accumulative qualities. All my works focus on straight lines and the crosshatch pattern with different variations of brush strokes, which slowly, construct build-ups of paint. My works originally consisted of single colours per piece, but i am keeping my practise invigorating and inspiring by experimenting with washes/varnishes and creating tension and excitement through different and sometimes-awkward colour combinations. With these works it is important for myself to be relatively spontaneous with my aesthetic choices and keep myself inspired over the thirty days to keep the intensity genuine. I feel these works blur the boundaries between sculpture and painting. I have explored various ways on displaying these works, which has helped me let the power of each piece speak for itself.
